The rules of the game

How ATAR works in Western Australia

Your ATAR comes from your best four scaled course scores, not from every subject you sit. Knowing that changes how a Year 11 student picks subjects.

How a Year 12 result becomes an ATAR in Western Australia. Course scores, scaling and the Tertiary Entrance Aggregate are set by SCSA and TISC, not by Everest.
StageWhat happens in WAWhat Everest adds
Course marks and examsSchools assess each ATAR course across the year; SCSA sets one written examination per course in the WACE examination period, which runs across late October and November of Year 12.Weekly class on the topic the school is testing next, plus a marked practice exam every term and a full paper before the WACE examination.
ScalingSCSA combines the school mark and the examination mark into a course score, then TISC scales each course so marks from different subjects can be compared.Tutors who sat the same courses explain what the examination rewards, so marks come from exam technique as well as content.
The best fourTISC adds a student's best four scaled scores to make a Tertiary Entrance Aggregate out of 400, then converts that aggregate to an ATAR between 0 and 99.95.Students commonly take two or three Everest subjects so the four that count are the four with support behind them.
Bonuses and prerequisitesSome courses add language or maths bonus points, and individual university courses set their own prerequisite subjects and minimum ATARs.Enrolment conversations check the subject choice against the pathway the student is aiming at before the term starts.

ATAR questions parents ask

Which ATAR subjects does Everest teach?
Mathematics Methods, Mathematics Specialist, Mathematics Applications, Chemistry, Physics, Human Biology, English and Economics. Economics runs at Harrisdale and online only; the other seven run at Harrisdale, Willetton, Perth Modern and online.
How much does ATAR tutoring cost?
One ATAR subject is $400 per 10-week term, two are $700, three are $950, four are $1,100 and five are $1,250. Prices include GST, the first class is free, and joining mid-term costs only the weeks left.
Can a Year 11 student start now, part way through the year?
Yes. Students join any week of any term and pay only for the weeks remaining. Year 11 classes work through Units 1 and 2 in the order most WA schools teach them, so a new student slots into the topic the school is on.
Do classes follow my school or the syllabus?
Both. Booklets follow the SCSA Units 1 to 4, and tutors reorder topics to match each school's assessment calendar so a topic is covered in the weeks before the school tests it. Bring your school's course outline to the first class.
Are the holiday masterclasses separate from the term classes?
Yes. The January and July ATAR masterclass covers the first four to five weeks of the coming term in a three-hour session per subject at $15 an hour, and the Term 3 holiday WACE revision masterclass covers Units 3 and 4 in two three-hour sessions per subject. Either can be booked without a term enrolment.
